Searches court records directly in the counties where the host has lived, for both felonies and misdemeanors. This is the most up-to-date source of criminal records, and it can catch cases national databases miss.

A nationwide check of identity, criminal records and sex offender registries.
Identity verification
Confirms the host is who they say they are, using a Social Security number trace that also turns up the places they've lived.
National criminal database search
Searches a nationwide database of criminal records gathered from courts, corrections departments and other sources.
National sex offender registry search
Checks the host against sex offender registries across all 50 states.
What “Background Pending” means
The host has started a background check and we're waiting on the results. Their badge changes once the check is complete.
Good to know
Background checks are optional for hosts, so a host without a badge hasn't necessarily failed one. They may simply not have completed a check yet.
A background check is one helpful piece of information, not a guarantee. Read reviews, message the host with any questions before you book, and remember a parent or guardian stays with the children for the whole visit.
